Use of paints and coatings is destined to last till the end of the world. There is an ever-growing need for improved coatings across the globe due to varied nature of application requirements arising from social and economic developments. It is estimated that about 45% of the coatings produced worldwide are used to decorate and protect new and existing structures, including residential homes and apartments, public buildings, and plants and factories; another 40% to decorate and/or protect industrial products and the remaining are specialty coatings which find application in traffic paints, vehicle refinishing, high-performance coatings for industrial plants and equipment, and protection of marine structures and vessels. The major change taken place in the coatings industry during the recent years has been the adoption of new production technologies to introduce enhanced functionalities in the products. Also government regulations on emissions, especially on industrial coating operations, stimulated the development of low-solvent and solvent-less coatings that could reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds.
